Essay:

The Eparges ridge was the subject of some violent fighting that formed the northwest border of the St.Mihiel salient. Tens of thousands of French and German soldiers died in the attacks and counter-attacks. The stalemate and destruction was only broken when the Americans intervened in September 1918, finally clearing Germans from the salient and giving the ridge back into the hands of the French.
