NOTE:
A similarly constructed painting, although somewhat larger, is illustrated in Luigi Salerno,' La natura morta italiana 1560 -1805', Rome, 1984, p.218, no.52.10, private collection. The picture can be dated to the 1670s. It is interesting to note the subtle combination of so many elements from other schools of still life painting, such as the Roman, Spanish and Flemish traditions. There are many precedents in these schools which Recco would have known and used to create this extremely beautiful composition and one of the finest examples of still life by Recco without fish.
