Essay:
Tibout Regters was born in Dordrecht in 1710. At an early age he went to study under Ten Hague in Arnhem and later under Meijer in Rotterdam in 1730. After this he travelled to Amsterdam to be apprenticed to the portrait painter Jan Maurits Quinkhard. Regters specialised in portrait painting. His conversation pieces are particularly noteworthy and are done in a manner which shows the influence of his master Quinckhard, for instance his portraits of guild members and his 'Double Portrait of Gijsbert Verbrugge and Maria Hooft with servants'.
