Essay:

Mattheus Molanus is an interesting landscape painter working very much in the circle of Jan Brueghel the Elder and his son Jan Brueghel the Younger. He specialised in finely drawn landscape compositions, invariably painted on copper or panel and usually on a small scale. In 1625 he was elected a member of the Guild of St Luke in his home town of Middelburg. The following year he bought a house in Middelburg and was registered as a painter and citizen there. He is mentioned frequently in the Guild's archives up until his death in 1645.
