Claude-Joseph Fraichot was born into a family of artists in Eastern France and mainly painted portraits and genre scenes. Between 1774 and 1792, he worked as a teacher of drawing at the local École de Peinture.

On the reverse an old label states:
"ce tableau/ a été peint par un / artiste Lorrain, en 1775, /à/ Sarreguemines/ (...)/ - / Strasbourg ce 21 aout 1879"
