Essay:

Louis Claude Malbranche began his career as a painter of genre scenes. His early works are influenced by the troubadour movement and by the religious revival of Christianity. From 1822 he specialised in autumn and winter landscapes at which he became extremely successful. He painted many views of the Pays d'Auge in his native Normandy as well as scenes from the Alps and Vosges.

At one time Malbranche was a student of Jean Louis Prévost as well as of Pierre Nolasque Bergeret. Malbranche exhibited at the Paris Salon of 1812 and regularly from 1819 until his death. In 1830 he also exhibited at the Luxembourg Palace. In 1831 he won a second-class gold medal for a work entitled Frozen Rider with Skaters at Sunset.
