Tentatively it may be possible to identify the young artist here as a self portrait, although the artist is not engaging the onlooker as directly as one might expect. The 'Self Portrait as a Draughtsman' in the Cook Collection in Bedford dates from 1670 and along with another self portrait (circa 1665) that resurfaced last year (also with Rafael Valls Ltd) it may be possible to attribute this as a second early (pre 1670) self portait, probably while still in the studio of Ferdinand Bol.
