Essay:
This important addition to the oeuvre of Hans Jordaens I is one of four known paintings by the artist on a large scale. Interestingly, Jordaens treats the same subject in a larger canvas, albeit with a number of compositional changes in the Museum Catharijneconvent, Utrecht (inv ABM s136). This canvas is 135 x 158 cms, although it does not appear to be signed or dated which may suggest that our canvas was the first version that he painted.
